ALBUM REVIEWS Friday, May 10, 1996 ARTIST: Def Leppard TITLE: Slang LABEL: PolyGram CANADIAN RELEASE: May 15, 1996 RATING (out of five): *** 1/2 ----------------------------------- While it might be the equivalent of marking on the bell curve, this altogether surprising offering from what seemed to be the quintessentially '80s pop-metal outfit actually hits harder than the new one from Soundgarden. While that has a great deal to do with relative expectations, it also reflects the unexpected grace with which this band has managed to update its sound without sounding like a bunch of ungainly geezers trying to sound like their nephews' CD collection. One listen to the slashing intro (au, 276K) to one of the album's best tracks, Gift Of Flesh, should be enough to convince anyone with even a grudging affection for these guys that we may have underestimated them all along. All in all, the most exceptional makeover of the year.
