Actually, the Santa Monica, CA pub feels like home to Vivian, who was born in Belfast and spends quite a bit of time in Dublin. He and fellow Irishman PJ Smith are the co-lead vocalists in Clock, which has a sound closer to the Beatles than Def Leppard - Viv likens it to "the Beatles with more guitars and drums" - and has been together for about a year but only began playing gigs a few months priot to this May 29 show at St. Stephen's, one of many there. Bassist Sasha Krivtsov and drummer Mark Schulman arrived late, detained by another gig, which appbreviated Clock's set, but the upbeat and melodic sonds were fun and well-received nevertheless. Afterward, Vivian revealed that it was an unpaid show: "It costs is to play." Why do it? "Def Leppard works so slow. I have to play. I lose my chops if I don't play. I like to sing, too. We don't expect to make money," he says, adding that Clock has "rekindled my interest in guitar. It's all good." While Clock recorded a demo, they're not currently making it available. "I'd like to do a record. We have a lot of good songs," says Vivian, adding, "Some songs I'm doing with Clock may be done by Def Leppard." He went to Dublin in mid-June to continue working on material with the band. "There's a lot of stuff, we've had a lot of writing sessions. I think there'll be more cooperative songs than there were on Slang. We're giving ourselves to the end of the year," he says, noting that Pete Woodroffe will once again co-produce with Def lep, but it will be "nothing like Slang, a lot like Pyromania, Hysteria, and High 'N' Dry. Slang was not a traditional Def Leppard record," states Vivian, "But this will be. I have full faith it will come out great." Recording will take place in Dublin, and mixing, likely in London, with a release expected in '99. Vivian plans to "go back and forth to Dublin when they need me," but will otherwise play Clock gig around L.A., largely at St. Stephen's Green.
