Def Leppard, which sold more albums in the 1980s than any other rock group, is the latest blockbuster name added to the lineup for Rogers Sarnia Bayfest. The English pop-metal band will headline the concert July 21 in Sarnia's Centennial Park. Tickets for Def Leppard - along with the previously announced Aerosmith show on July 19 and three-day passes to the festival - go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. Tickets are on sale for country star Toby Keith's July 20 concert. Fans who bought Keith tickets may upgrade to three-day passes starting Saturday, but they must do so before the passes sell out - which is a distinct possibility, Bayfest organizer Michele Stokley said. "By the response - the phone calls and e-mails that ourselves and our ticket outlets are having - we feel it will," Stokley said. About 20,000 tickets are available for each night's concert. Once they are sold, they are gone. Def Leppard includes two founding members and everyone from the group's '80s heyday except guitarist Steve Clark, who died in 1991. The band first cracked the U.S. charts in 1983 with the album Pyromania. That album's success was eclipsed four years later by Hysteria, which charted seven singles, including Pour Some Sugar On Me. Bob Grugel of Port Huron has seen the band in concert three times. He hopes to make it four in Sarnia. "Their records are pretty elaborate and they always seem to pull off the sound of their albums live," he said. The band has not yet announced any other tour dates for 2007. "This is a big step for us," Stokley said. "Basically they're starting with us as a date and working around us." Stokley said it's possible one more concert might be announced for July 22, but "for right now this is our lineup." It will be tougher for those who opt for the cheaper, general admission tickets to get a spot in the front row this year. In addition to a 19-and-older VIP area on the right half of the stage, which debuted last year, an all-ages VIP option has been added. The sections will take up most of the area in front of the stage. Contact Bill Chapin at (810) 989-0741 or bchapin@gannett.com. Copyright ©2007 The Times Herald. All rights reserved.
