Def Leppard brings 'Rock of Ages' to state fair

Saturday, August 26th, 2000

Def Leppard's first full-length album, "On Through the Night," came out in 1980 to a small, but significant, wave of hype. The group was heralded as defining a new movement in British heavy metal, along with bands like Iron Maiden.

It was a very big deal then, but listening to "On Through the Night" now makes you wonder why. The young Def Leppard plodded through half-written songs and basically got by on bravado, enthusiasm and volume.

Def Leppard pleases fair crowd with '80s party music

Friday, August 25th, 2000

"Just listen to that," Def Leppard lead singer Joe Elliott declared after an ovation early in the band's concert Thursday at the State Fair grandstand. "That's a big noise. It really is."

Which was more surprising: the excited response of the 11,423 grandstand-goers or the sounds-as-good-as-ever performance of one of the biggest hair-metal bands of the 1980s?

Def Leppard pours it on at Grandstand

Friday, August 25th, 2000

Spinal Tap, the fictitious hair band depicted in Rob Reiner's 1984 mock rockumentary, "This is Spinal Tap," is said to be reuniting this year for a tour and album. Someone beat them to the punch. Def Leppard, the biggest hair band of the '80s, kicked off the State Fair's Grandstand lineup Thursday night with a set that was as big and dumb and fun and forgettable as any kid's first 3.2-beer hangover. And while the calendar read 2000, Lep provided a trip back to the days of Reagan- Thatcher, and a soundtrack that launched countless backseat romances in the '80s.

Just as it's hard to argue the weird appeal of watching Princess Kay of the Milky Way get sculpted in butter, it's hard to resist the spectacle of five Brits on a summer night in Middle America…

These files are available from the Downloadable Files section. Many thanks go to Deanna for showing me how to do this.

Def Leppard remains a beast intact

Monday, August 21st, 2000

Def Leppard, the long-running English pop-metal band that opened last year's run of Iowa State Fair Grandstand concerts, returned Sunday night to close down the 2000 series and pour some aural sugar on 8,033 euphoric fans.

Despite the repeat booking, just 1,830 fewer fans showed up than in 1999, and most of the 18 songs Def Leppard played were received as if it was the mid-"80s, hairstyles were big and Kurt Cobain hadn't yet smelled the teen spirit that would inspire him to replace "80s metal with "90s grunge.

Def Leppard proves it still can rock

Sunday, August 20th, 2000

Hard rock band Def Leppard's songs are made for two things: getting played on the radio and being shouted by big crowds in stadiums.

Music snobs may sneer at that formula, but it helped the band pioneer a memorable brand of melodic heavy metal that inspired dozens of imitators in the 1980s.

It's OK again to like Def Leppard

Sunday, August 20th, 2000

Is it cool again to like Def Leppard? The Brit pop-metal band was huge in the '80s, selling 10 million copies of "Pyromania" (1983) and 12 million of "Hysteria" (1987).

Then the bottom fell out in the '90s, when the grunge movement shoved the more polished Leppard aside.

Metal-pop nostalgia gratifies Def ears

Sunday, August 20th, 2000

Rock music returned to the Indiana State Fair on Tuesday night, absent since the Goo Goo Dolls and Gin Blossoms played the Grandstand in 1996 (and perhaps hinted at by Savage Garden in 1998).

The Y2K comeback rested on the reliable shoulders of Def Leppard, who attracted an audience of about 7,500.

Def Leppard's slickness survives, stirs memories

A critical review of Def Leppard's Thursday night show at the riverfront amphitheater?

What's the point, right?

People who like — really like — Def Leppard probably don't read reviews or care. Nor should they. Def Leppard isn't the sort of band that warrants the energy serious critical dissection takes.
