Cheesy or not, Def Leppard remains sharp decades later

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Cheesy. Gooey. Crunchy. Corny.

These are not just words that could be used in Taco Bell or Frito-Lay ad campaigns. They're also accurate descriptors for Def Leppard, which just about packed the Marcus Amphitheater Friday night.

"Dated" could also be added to the list of adjectives: The British metal quintet had its heyday in the 1980s, and not much mainstream culture from that decade has dodged the tang of mousse or the painful memory of acid-washed, pre-ripped jeans.

Opening Night: Downstage Thrust Tour 2007

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Last night, Def Leppard kicked off their Downstage Thrust Tour 2007 in Cincinnati, Ohio. For a first night, there were few - if any - noticeable flaws.

The Brits opened their show with "Rocket," and continued with "Animal" and "Excitable."

"Foolin'" came next, and then lead singer Joe Elliot asked guitarist Vivian Campbell to join him on the catwalk.

Vivian obliged.

Def Leppard looks to cause hysteria at Bayfest

Friday, June 29th, 2007

This is an old article from earlier this year regarding the upcoming summer tour:

The summer concert season just got a little more hot and sticky sweet.

Def Leppard, which sold more albums in the 1980s than any other rock group, is the latest blockbuster name added to the lineup for Rogers Sarnia Bayfest. The English pop-metal band will headline the concert July 21 in Sarnia's Centennial Park.

Tickets for Def Leppard - along with the previously announced Aerosmith show on July 19 and three-day passes to the festival - go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Def Leppard to pull from catalog on tour

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Campbell talked about what it was like replacing Steve Clark following his drug overdose, along with Def Leppard’s current tour with Styx and Foreigner, which stops at First Midwest Bank Amphitheater on June 30.

Last year, you released “Yeah!,” which was a tribute album to the band’s musical heroes. Are you working on anything new?

We just finished a new album. That will be mixed while we are on the tour. We’re also waiting for one, maybe two songs from Mutt Lange, our longtime producer and collaborator. We’re holding off on the release of the record until we get that done.

Def Leppard Nearly Complete With 'Sparkly' New Album

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Def Leppard is "about 85, 90 percent finished" with its next album, which frontman Joe Elliott describes as "a very rock album" tentatively titled "Songs From the Sparkle Lounge."

"I'm not gonna say it's radically different to anything we've ever done," Elliott tells Billboard.com. "There's classic Def Leppard. There's stuff that sounds like it's going back to the middle, late-'70s AC/DC and new wave-type sounding stuff. There's definitely some moments on it where anybody that's familiar with our music will go, 'Whoa! I wasn't expecting that!' We've just been very adventurous, musically, on certain numbers."

Elliott says the "Sparkle Lounge" album title refers to a room the group maintained backstage during its 2006 tour dates, where the musicians would congregate with co-producer and live sound technician Ronan McHugh to work up and record ideas.

Def Leppard High & Mighty

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

Def Leppard have probably never received their due credit. Oh sure, it's hard to feel sorry for a band that has sold more than 50 million albums during their 25 year career, and has received more accolades for their accomplishments that most Nobel Prize winners. But the undeniable fact is that despite all that they've done in the rock and roll world - highlighted by their mid-'80s double-play combo of Pyromania and Hysteria which together have sold over 25 million copies - vocalist Joe Elliott, bassist Rick Savage, drummer Rick Allen, guitarist Phil Collen and late guitarist Steve Clark (since replaced by Vivian Campbell) rarely receive the degree of respect one would anticipate.

Elliott, for one, admits that at one time such back-of-the-hand treatment bothered him. He says that while so many of his compatriots were being singled out for being "cool", "hip" or "cutting edge", the Leps had to content themselves with selling more records than anyone this side of Bon Jovi. But the truth is that perhaps no other band played a greater role in shaping the core sound and style of the '80s hard rock recent than these quintessential English aces. Sure, chart-topping hits such as Photograph, Pour Some Sugar on Me and Rock of Ages may sound "cute" on today's rock radio, but their real significance is that they helped establish new hard rock boundaries and precedence… quite simply, they helped open the doors for the metal floodgates that would soon follow.
